Saints & Mentors for Catechists: Dr. Christiane Brusselmans

Jul 13, 2026

Christiane, born in Louvain, Belgium, was a catechetical advocate for children and a pioneer in the implementation of the Rite of Christian Initiation in the United States.

In 1965, she completed a doctoral program at The Catholic University of America, subsequently teaching at Fordham University, Boston College, North American College in Rome; Harvard Divinity School, Union Theological Seminary and various other academic institutions. Her influence was much broader than the university, she influenced a generation of seminarians, priests, religious and laity through her workshops, presentations at diocesan religious education conventions, national and international gatherings of teachers and catechists, priests and religious in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Africa, New Zealand, China, Ireland, England, France Germany, Holland and in almost all of the fifty states in the United States.

Christiane authored several innovative religious education programs for children and their families: We Celebrate the Eucharist; We Celebrate Reconciliation; and SUNDAY: Celebration of the Word.

One of her most significant contributions was her work in restoring the catechumenate and promoting what became the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). She understood that becoming a Christian is not merely a matter of learning doctrines but of entering into a living relationship with Christ within a faith community. Her efforts helped many parishes rediscover the importance of accompanying seekers through a process of conversion, formation, prayer, and belonging.

Her vision extended beyond parish programs. She believed deeply in the vocation of the laity and in the essential role of families in the Church's mission. Long before many people spoke of the "domestic church," she recognized that homes are often the first and most influential places where faith is nurtured.

Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Brusselmans challenges catechists to see themselves not merely as teachers but as companions on the journey of faith. Her life reminds us that catechesis is about helping people encounter Christ, discover their vocation, and participate fully in the mission of the Church.

Reflections to Hold, Pray, and Live

  • How am I creating spaces where faith can grow as a lifelong journey?
  • How am I supporting families as primary witnesses of faith?
