Saints & Mentors for Catechists: Joanne Chafe

Feb 24, 2026

Joanne Chafe devoted her life to the growth of faith and the formation of the Church across Canada and beyond. From an early age, she sensed a call to serve through religious education—a call that would shape nearly four decades of dedicated ministry. For 37 years she worked in the National Office of Religious Education of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, offering leadership, vision, and steady commitment to catechesis and lifelong faith development.

During those years, Joanne helped guide national conversations about how the Church forms believers in changing cultural contexts. She contributed to the development of resources, policies, and pastoral initiatives that strengthened religious education in dioceses across Canada. Her work consistently emphasized that faith formation is not confined to childhood but is a lifelong journey requiring thoughtful accompaniment, theological depth, and pastoral sensitivity.

Joanne also became a respected leader internationally, particularly in the field of adult faith formation. She served as President of the Religious Education Association, fostering collaboration among scholars, pastors, and educators throughout the United States and Canada. Her leadership helped build bridges between academic theology and parish practice, encouraging dialogue that enriched both.

Her commitment to adult religious education extended globally when she served as President of the International Forum on Adult Religious Education. In that role, she supported efforts to promote lifelong catechesis and shared best practices among leaders from many countries.

Through wisdom, humility, and unwavering dedication, Joanne Chafe has shaped generations of catechists and believers. Joanne’s legacy to catechists is one of vision and service—helping the Church recognize that adult faith formation is essential to a vibrant, living community of faith.

Reflections to Hold, Pray, and Live

  •  In what ways does my parish or school intentionally support adult faith formation, not just sacramental preparation?

  • Propose or help facilitate a small group, Scripture study, book discussion, or seasonal reflection for adults. Share resources (articles, podcasts, Church documents) that help adults continue growing in faith beyond sacramental milestones.
