Saints & Mentors for Catechists: St. Robert Bellarmine
Jan 15, 2026
St. Robert Bellarmine was named the patron saint of catechists for several reasons. He catechized countless people, much as we do today. He also authored a catechism—something we no longer do ourselves, relying instead on the excellent resources provided by Catholic publishers. Most compelling for us, however, is Bellarmine’s deep love of learning and his lifelong devotion to studying Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church. He understood learning as a way of serving God and regarded it as an essential foundation for effective teaching.
Today, we are surrounded by opportunities to follow Bellarmine’s example by continuing to grow in knowledge as we nurture our faith and our catechetical ministry. These opportunities include parish and (arch)diocesan formation programs, online courses, regular gatherings of catechists within our parishes or regions, retreats, faith-sharing and prayer groups, books and periodicals, days of reflection, workshops, seasonal parish and (arch)diocesan offerings, Scripture study, and experiences of service followed by reflection.
Reflections to Hold, Pray, and Live
- Where do I sense an invitation to grow at this stage of my catechetical ministry -
intellectually, spiritually, or pastorally? - How does my commitment to continued learning shape my effectiveness as a catechist?
