Saints & Mentors for Catechists: Saints Cyril & Methodius

Jul 13, 2026

Born in Greece, Cyril and Methodius were brothers who became missionaries to the Slavic people of ninth century Moravia. They did far more than teach the faith; they showed what it means to bring the Gospel into the heart of people's lives and cultures.

When they were sent to the Slavic people, they did not expect the people to adapt to them. Instead, they learned the language, invented an alphabet (the Cyrillic alphabet used in modern Russian), translated Scripture and liturgical texts, composed a Slavic liturgy and preached in the vernacular.

These acts of inculturation were criticized by other missionaries but won them the praise of the Pope, who named them both bishops. Their example reminds catechists that faith formation begins with listening. Before we can teach, we must know the people before us—their questions, hopes, struggles, experiences, and dreams.

Cyril and Methodius also model for us the importance of creativity in catechesis. They did not simply repeat familiar methods; they sought new ways to share the ancient faith. Catechists today do the same: present the timeless message of Christ in ways that connect with contemporary learners while remaining faithful to the Gospel.

Their lives also witness to perseverance. Their mission was not always welcomed. They faced opposition, misunderstandings, and obstacles. Yet they remained committed to their calling. Catechists, at times, experience discouragement when participation is low, learners seem uninterested, or efforts do not bear immediate fruit. Cyril and Methodius remind us that God works through patient and faithful sowing.

Perhaps most importantly, these saints understood that catechesis is not merely about passing on information. Their goal was to help people encounter Christ and allow the Gospel to take root in daily life. They recognized the dignity of every culture and trusted that God's Spirit was already at work among the people they served.

Reflections to Hold, Pray, and Live

  • What "new alphabets" or creative approaches might help today's learners hear the Gospel?
  • In what ways do I honor the unique gifts, backgrounds, and cultures of those entrusted to my care?
