Saints & Mentors for Catechists: Sr. Jose Hobday
Mar 18, 2026
Sr. Jose Hobday, a Seneca woman who grew up on a reservation in Colorado, carried a deep awareness of story from an early age. At just seven years old, her tribe recognized a special gift in her and chose her to be a storyteller. For Native communities, storytelling is more than entertainment; it is a sacred way of passing on wisdom, identity, and faith. Sr. Jose brought that tradition into her ministry, sharing stories and insights in her catechesis throughout the world.
Her approach reminds catechists that faith is not only taught through explanations and doctrines but also through stories that speak to the heart. Jesus himself often taught this way—through parables that invited listeners to reflect, imagine, and discover truth for themselves. Sr. Jose’s storytelling echoed that same spirit, helping people see God’s presence in everyday life.
She also helped the Church rediscover the wisdom present in Native American spirituality. She spoke about the importance of prayer that is rooted in creation—recognizing God’s presence in the earth, sky, water, and all living things. She emphasized the deep connection between the living and the dead, reminding us that those who have gone before us remain part of our community of faith.
Sr. Jose also encouraged people to embrace silence and solitude. In a world filled with constant noise, silence becomes a place where we can listen for God’s voice. Finally, she reminded us of the importance of celebration. Faith is not only something to study; it is something to rejoice in together.
For catechists, Sr. Jose Hobday’s life offers a gentle but powerful reminder: teaching the faith is not only about passing on information. It is about helping others experience the living story of God among us.
