Saints & Mentors for Catechists: St. Cyril of Jerusalem
Apr 14, 2026
Cyril of Jerusalem lived during a remarkable moment in Christian history. Born around the time of the Edict of Milan in 313, which legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire, Cyril witnessed the Church moving from persecution into a new era of public life. As Bishop of Jerusalem, he devoted himself to forming new Christians in the faith, especially those preparing for baptism at Easter.
Cyril’s most lasting legacy is his Catechetical Lectures, instructions given to catechumens and the newly baptized. These teachings are treasured not only for their explanation of the sacraments and the liturgy, but also for the way they reveal Cyril’s pastoral heart. He understood that catechesis is not merely about transmitting information; it is about awakening faith within the human person.
Cyril paid particular attention to what we might call the affective dimension of catechesis—the formation of the heart. He spoke to the imagination, the senses, and the deep longing for God within each person. When explaining the mysteries of baptism and the Eucharist, he did not treat them as abstract theological ideas. Instead, he invited people to experience the wonder of what God was doing in their lives. He helped them see themselves as participants in a sacred story, transformed through Christ.
For catechists today, Cyril offers an important reminder. While it is essential to teach the truths of the faith clearly, effective catechesis also touches the heart. Faith grows when people encounter beauty in the liturgy, feel welcomed within the community, and sense that God is personally calling them.
Catechesis becomes most powerful when it engages both mind and heart—when it not only explains the faith but also helps people love it.

In your catechesis, how do you help learners not only understand the faith but also experience its beauty and meaning?
-
What practices—storytelling, prayer, symbols, ritual, etc.—might help engage the hearts of those you teach?
